S RESIDENCE

Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi
Selim V Koder Architects
01.2015 - 02.2016

The project is a private residential villa on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, with a total built up area of 1,100sqm, including various private, social, service and exterior facilities. The architecture was designed with a sense of volume, light and space.

The spatial organization and use of glass dilute the boundary between exterior and interior. Different volume of spaces brings in multiple points of vistas in the house which mainly focus on to the recreational spaces. Common spaces include areas with semi private functions placed at ground floor, while private spaces are placed on the first floor for more privacy.

The architecture is complemented with modern interiors created by a mélange of contrasting yet harmonious materials, combining masculine and feminine to create a playful and elegant style, transforming the spaces into an artistic experience. The main entrance lobby and courtyard forms a welcoming space in the house. Using raw and refined materials, the grand double height volume of
the space overlook into a large pool deck with access to recreational areas. A proposal was developed to volumetrize this space, transforming it into a sculptural experience.

Details of interior finishes were focused on. The massing of circulation forms a core space for accessing all other spaces in the house. Inspired by the art of James Turell, an echelon staircase connects the grand passage at three different levels. Intense colors, contrasting textures (shagreen, lacquer, leather, horse-hair) were used, and furniture, fixtures, and lighting schemes that were tailored to fit the client›s personalities.
